While MCI increases dementia risk, many individuals remain stable for years. Evidence-based strategies that may help maintain cognitive function and overall health include:

Regular Physical Activity

Aerobic exercise (for example brisk walking 150 minutes per week) is associated with improved cognitive performance and reduced progression risk.

Cardiovascular Risk Management

Control of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and smoking reduces vascular contributions to cognitive decline.

Cognitive Engagement

Structured cognitive training, learning new skills, reading, and social interaction support cognitive reserve.

Sleep Optimization

Address sleep apnea, insomnia, and poor sleep quality, as sleep disturbances are associated with accelerated cognitive decline.

Nutrition

Mediterranean-style dietary patterns emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil, and limited processed foods are associated with better cognitive outcomes.

Routine Monitoring

Regular follow-up with a healthcare professional allows monitoring of change, medication review, and early detection of progression.
